Saudi military invasion, turning Yemen into Iraq, Syria: Economist

Tehran, March 27, IRNA – A British weekly has criticized Saudi Arabia for launching airstrikes against Yemen, warning Riyadh against the repercussions of the move.

The Economist said by leading a military campaign to reinstall Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi as president, Riyadh may push Yemen into what Jamal Benomar, the UN envoy to Yemen, has described as an “Iraq-Libya-Syria scenario”.

Early on the morning of March 26th the kingdom said it had launched a military operation to reinstate the government of (fugitive) President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi.

While Saudi Arabia claimed that its airstrikes hit Ansarullah's positions in Sana’a, the Yemeni capital, including the airport and the group’s political headquarters, later reports revealed that the air campaign had mainly targeted residential areas, resulting in the death of dozens of civilians.

The Saudi regime's Arab allies in the Persian Gulf as well as Israel and the US are assisting Riyadh.

Last time Saudi Arabia intervened against Ansarullah in Yemen, it suffered blowback. In response to Saudi airstrikes against the Ansarullah in and around the Northern region of Saada, Ansarullah fighters crossed over the Saudi border, seizing dozens of towns and villages.

The Ansarullah have once again threatened to take the fight across the border.

“This will be just like the sixth war in Saada when the Saudis lost Saudi territory,” said a Houthi man in Sana'a, referring to the 2009 offensive, according to the Economist report.
