2015 World Taekwondo Championships cup offered to Supreme Leader

Tehran, May 18, IRNA – Bijan Moqanlu, the head coach of Iran National Taekwondo Team offered the cup and championship title of the team, gained in the 22nd edition of the 2015 WTF World Taekwondo Championships in Chelyabinsk, Russia, to the Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

The Iran Taekwondo Federation said Iranian Mean's National Taekwondo Team on Monday won the first title of the World Taekwondo Championships before the event ends.

Moqanlu, congratuling the Supreme Leader on the success, offered the cup and the title to His Excellency as well as Iranian martyrs and nation.

Athletes from 144 countries are competing in the tournament, in which Iranian men's taekwondo national team ranked first.

After Iran's representative in -80 weight class, Mehdi Khodabakhshi, advanced to semi-finals on Monday and representatives of other hopeful teams – South Korea, Russia and Uzbekistan – were kicked out of the games, Iran, that was on top of the games, claimed early championship.

The tournament will come to an end Monday night in both men's and women's categories.

Mehdi Khodabakhshi, Abolfazl Yaqoubi and Kimiya Alizadeh from Iran will compete against their rivals in the semi-finals Monday night.

This is the second time that Iran becomes world champion. Iran clinched world championship for the first time in South Korea in 2011.
